Irresistible little delights from Méert Confectionery

The confectionery has its origins in Lille, having been founded here in 1761, although its real story begins in 1849 when Michael Méert took over the business after spending a few years working on cocoa, sugar cane, vanilla and coffee farms in the French colonies. As a result, the exotic flavors of Méert products have their roots in ancient cultivation methods.

Méert is more of a confectioner than a pastry chef. In this beautiful Empire-style shop, we find waffles, chocolates, gingerbread, marshmallows and toffees all made in Lille, as well as a wonderful variety of pastries and cakes.

The iconic product here is a very special Madagascan vanilla waffle which can be enjoyed accompanied by a range of flavorings: lemon/citrus, raspberry, pistachio and speculoos, chestnut cream…

The waffle is made from a dough containing eggs, flour, sugar, butter and yeast. The filling is made of sugar, butter and vanilla. It is a real force to be reckoned with…

The waffle is cooked for 15 seconds and flattened to remove excess steam. The result is a crispy outside and a melting center. Learn more:

And the price? €3 each and €16.50 for a box of 6. This seems like a reasonable charge for an original gift that will keep for ten days.

The shop has a variety of offerings which are all as enticing as each other: tuiles, florentines, marrons glacés…and I could go on. Images are worth a thousand words. Careful though, your stomach may rumble if you last ate a little while ago.

A little anecdote to finish: General de Gaulle, who was from Lille, was very fond of Méert waffles and continued to have them delivered to the Elysée Palace when he was French President because these little delights reminded him of his childhood.
