“Good trip idea”: Museum of Romantics

We usually provide you with our best addresses as long as they are maximum a 10-minute walk from the Relais du Louvre, but when it is a really good location, we hesitate on making an exception. This is indeed a small hidden paradise, a timeless bubble in central Paris, where few tourists visit.

This museum is located on rue Chaptal in a neighborhood of Pigalle which was called in the early part of the nineteenth century, the “New Athens”, where many artists belonging to the current Romanticism lived and coexisted.

You enter the Scheffer-Renan hotel through a charming, almost anachronic, paved driveway, after which unfolds a garden with roses and lilacs and an Italian styled pavilion in the museum. This preserved place is particularly enjoyable during a beautiful sunny day.

The building, built in 1830, is the former home of Dutch-born painter AryScheffer and was the main inspiration for the romanticism in Paris. Some visitors included Chopin, George Sand, Gounod, Dickens, Stravinsky, Ernest Renand, Delacroix, Rossini, Turgenev…

On the ground floor of the pavilion, the museum exhibits paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, jewelery, and window objects from the era of ​​George Sand to Nohant. The novelist came to visit the painter as a neighbor. 

The intimate world of the author expresses himself well in this place where we are truly immersed in his private life. We continue the visit with a “Petit salon bleu”, in which are notably exhibited watercolors by George Sand, which she called “dentrites”, watercolors “with crushing”, which fascinated the novelist at the end of her life.

The 2nd floor of the pavilion is dedicated topainter Ary Scheffer and some of his contemporaries, such as the philosopher Ernest Renan. Part of his library is presented.

Before or after the tour, you can enjoy a quite moment in the magical garden that offers serenity and tranquility. A tearoom offers drinks, pies and sweet, salads, hot and cold drinks at reasonable prices: a little food break in a place where time and the Paris trepidation are suspended. There are not many places like this in Paris, so you cannot afford to miss the opportunity.
